Thanks for bringing the subject of sincerity up. Often times, it’s difficult to determine between putting on a show of going through the motions or devotion of the heart. Even with our own actions, sometimes we are really unsure. In my own worship times, I can catch momentary thoughts that wander to what others are thinking or just get distracted. I think it is most important to raise this issue before the Lord. He can change not only the situation, but He can change us and make us new. If we find that we cannot put our hearts into the time with God, then we should pray for God to give us devotion and a deep longing for Him.
Besides the most important thing to do, prayer, I think that some of other things to consider are these:
When we are going into quiet time with the Lord, we should quiet our mind and our heart. This means to put the many unimportant thoughts to rest and prepare ourselves to empty our hearts. The many, many things that we worry about, that continue to give our hearts trouble, it’s time to let it go. Easier said than done of course. Practically speaking, we should put away all distractions. For example, if the phone by the side is going to beep, then we need to hide it away. If food is a distraction, then maybe quiet time isn’t good close to the kitchen. There’s always going to be things that come up, but we should try to minimize within our own will.
When we pray, simply said, it is communicating with God. He doesn’t require long eloquent speeches. He requires sincerity and true worship. This means a longing to want to spend time with the Lord. We should find ourselves praying about what we care about. God loves us and He surely listens to the desires that we have. What is important to us should bring us to our knees and a need of God.
